Een nieuwe plaat van AC/DC?

Nee dus. Een nieuwe CD van het Duitse Motorjesus. O, wat een heerlijk schaamteloos gesloten intro opent ‘Wheels Of Purgatory’, het nieuwe (en derde) wapenfeit van de band. De Duitsers staan voor vuige, harde rock and roll die liefhebbers van Motörhead of – dichter bij huis - ons eigen Peter Pan Speedrock wel zal aanspreken. Vrij ongecompliceerde maar uitstekend gespeelde metalrock. Al sinds het debuut ‘Dirty Pounding Gasoline’(2004) zijn de mannen trouw aan hun eerlijke muziek. Dat valt best te waarderen. Wat de Duitsers voor hebben op veel van hun landgenoten is hun internationale sound: zowel in de muziek als in de zang klinken de mannen Amerikaanser dan menig band uit Texas. Ook dat is een compliment.

Niet onvermeld mag blijven dat de band een fijne coverversie in petto heeft van Neil Young’s ‘Old Man’, het enige rustige nummer op dit album. Ook in dit nummer bewijst Birx een fijne zanger te zijn, staat als eerste in de preview hieronder.

Scott Gorham (Santa Monica, Californië, 17 maart 1951) is een Amerikaanse gitarist en songwriter. Gorham groeide op in Glendale (Californië) waar hij de gitaar ter hand nam en als teenager in verschillende rockbands speelde.

Gorham werd onder de aandacht van Phil Lynott van Thin Lizzy gebracht. Thin Lizzy had weliswaar een hit met Whiskey in the Jar maar bleek niet in staat gitaristen vast te houden.

Lynott nodigde Gorham uit voor een tryout, waarna Gorham samen met Brian Robertson een nieuwe line-up vormde. Gorham speelde in Thin Lizzy tussen 1974 en 1983 (het jaar waarin de groep werd opgeheven), en sinds de hereniging van Thin Lizzy in 1996.

Na het uiteenvallen van Thin Lizzy in 1983 werkte Gorham mee aan een album van Phenomena. Via zijn werk voor Phenomena leerde hij onder meer Leif Johanson kennen, met wie hij de band 21 Guns oprichtte. Gorham werkte verder als (gast)gitarist voor onder meer Asia, Rollins Band en het soloalbum van Bob Siebenberg.

Daar waar vrouwen over het algemeen het prettig vinden om flink uit te wijden over van-alles-en-nog-wat, is de man een stuk minder uitbundig in het delen van z’n ziele-roerselen.

Anberlin is daar een mooi voorbeeld van. Een echte mannenband die zich niet snel laat kennen, maar niet omdat ze niets te vertellen hebben, integendeel! Ruim 2 jaar deden ze over het maken van ‘Dark is the way, Light is a place’, een album dat de verwachtingen waar maakt: strak gepolijste (emo) rock in een blend met het typische stemgeluid van zanger Stephen.

Inhoudelijk is er ook het nodige gepiekerd, maar als deze mannen dan eindelijk wat zeggen is het ook de moeite van het luisteren waard!

'Dark is the Way, Light is a Place' volgt 'New Surrender' uit 2008 op. Na een aantal keer deze cd geluisterd te hebben ben ik begonnen aan deze recensie. Het album wist me in eerste instantie goed te pakken door de nummers 'Pray Tell' en 'Depraved'. Daarna bleef ik de cd luisteren en steeds geheel opnieuw afdraaien en begonnen de andere nummers ook steeds meer voor me te leven. De geweldige stem van frontman Stephen Christian springt er weer geweldig goed uit. Hij weet me steeds weer mee te slepen in de nummers van deze band.

"The Blues + The Rock Collection's" are two compilation albums by legendary guitarist, 'Gary Moore'. Released separately in 2003, they were re-released as a two album, limited edition box set in 2004. All the tracks are taken from his extensive album discography and were remastered in 2002.

Robert William Gary Moore is geboren op 4 april 1952 te Belfast, Noord-Ierland en gestorven in februari 2011 te Estepona, Spanje en was één van in totaal vijf kinderen. Zijn vader, Robert Moore, was een lokale concertpromotor. Zijn moeder Winnie was huisvrouw. Zodoende groeide Gary op met het luisteren naar muziek van Ierse bands, live spelen en country-, rock- en popmuziek uit die tijd.

Op zesjarige leeftijd, in 1958, trad Gary al voor het eerst op. Gekleed in een korte broek en staand op een stoel om bij de microfoon te komen, zong hij samen met de showband een nummer dat “Sugartime” heet. In 1962, Gary was toen 10 jaar, kocht zijn vader een gitaar van een muzikant. Dit was een gigantisch grote akoestische gitaar (een Framus). De snaren waren erg hard, moeilijk af te stemmen en de gitaar was hiermee dus erg moeilijk te bespelen.

Toch heeft Gary in de eerste week al een aantal Shadows-liedjes onder de knie weten te krijgen. Hij had zichzelf wat akkoorden aangeleerd met behulp van een boek, keek naar andere mensen die gitaar speelden, luisterde naar platen en kreeg zo het gevoel van het gitaarspelen. Hoewel hij linkshandig is, begon hij te spelen met een rechtshandige gitaar, simpelweg omdat hij andere gitaristen dat ook zag doen. Een jaar later trad Gary op onder de naam “Little Gary”.

Weer twee jaar later, het was toen 1965, speelt Gary in een bandje genaamd “The Beat Boys” in zijn vaders club net buiten Belfast. Later speelden ze in hotels en balzalen en qua repertoire speelden ze feitelijk alles wat het publiek maar wilde horen. Zijn eerste soloalbum bracht Moore in 1973 uit als de Gary Moore Band.

In 1979 startte hij, met hulp van Phil Lynott, een echte solocarrière. De combinatie van Moores gitaarspel en Lynotts stem leverden de single Parisienne Walkways (van het album ‘Back On The Streets’) op dat in april 1979 de Britse top tien haalde. Na een serie stevige rock-albums keerde Moore terug naar de blues met het album Still Got the Blues, met daarop bijdragen van B.B. King, Albert King en Albert Collins. Dit album was een geweldig succes. Moore bleef bij de blues tot 1997, toen hij besloot te gaan experimenteren met moderne dancebeats in Dark Days In Paradise. Dit zette vele fans, en ook de muziekpers, danig op het verkeerde been. Met het album Back to the Blues keerde Moore uiteindelijk terug op het vertrouwde bluesstramien. Zijn meest recente album is Bad for you baby.

Gary Moore overleed op 58-jarige leeftijd op 6 februari 2011 tijdens zijn vakantie[1] in een hotel in Estepona, Spanje door verstikking in zijn eigen braaksel, na overmatig drankgebruik. Hij was woonachtig in Brighton. Moore laat vier kinderen achter: Saoirse, Jack, Gus en Lily. Toch kut hoor, zo aan je eind komen.

Met de downloads hierboven kom je een heel eind V.W.B. Gary. Het filmpje hieronder maakt het af. Zijn blonde - grijze maat op de zwarte stratocaster is Scott Gorham, daar doe ik later deze week nog even iets van in de herhaling.

Astral Doors returns with "Testament of Rock-The Best of Astral Doors"; a real pleaser for old and new fans, which also contains the majestic hockey anthem, "Victory", previously only released in Swedish. But hey; perhaps you want to know more about Astral Doors?!

In early 2002, Swedish guitarist Joachim Nordlund and drummer Johan Lindstedt teamed up and decided to write some metal songs in the spirit of the old heroes Rainbow, Dio, Sabbath and Deep Purple. Nils Patrik Johansson, an old time friend of Johan, was asked to do the vocals in the project. Nils Patrik accepted the offer and ASTRAL DOORS was almost a reality. Joachim asked his former band-mate Jocke Roberg, if he wanted to join, and a handshake later the band had a keyboarder. Martin Haglund, guitar and Mika Itaranta, bass, also joined the Astral Forces and the band was now complete.

With songs like "Power and the Glory", "Testament of Rock", "St. Peters Cross" and many more, the album will be recognized as one of the best Astral Doors albums to this day. After playing some of the most important festivals 2010, the band decided to put together a compilation with their best songs as a treat for old fans, but most important; to win over new fans. "Testament of Rock-The Best of Astral Doors" also contains a previous unreleased song.

With a deft, fingerpicking style that references bluegrass, jazz, blues, and rock, Knopfler's guitar playing sounds like no one else's. And his literate, evocative pop songs and understated, Dylan-esque vocal delivery are by no means run of the mill either. Nestled between his best-known tunes ("Sultans of Swing;" "Money for Nothing"), are gems like the grooving "Skateaway," the jazzy, minor-key "Your Latest Trick," and the instrumental "Going Home." While PRIVATE INVESTIGATIONS is not comprehensive in terms of either the Dire Straits catalogue or its leader's solo output, it is an excellent sampler of Knopfler's talents.

Since the 1970s Mark Knopfler has been carving out a niche for himself as a distinctive and much-admired songwriter and guitarist, first with his band Dire Straits and later as a solo artist.

This 2-disc set collects many of the highlights from both phases of Knopfler's career. For the first time, a compilation brings together the best of one of rock's most admired bands, Dire Straits, and the best of its leader, guitarist-singer-songwriter Mark Knopfler. Private Investigations: Best of Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler, a double CD, spans their entire careers.

Op de één of andere manier, waarom geen idee, lijkt het wel of Joe Nichols enigszins wordt genegeerd als er wordt gesproken over de huidige countryzangers. Hij is succesvol maar krijgt toch niet die aandacht die vele artiesten wel krijgen. Vanaf het moment dat hij is doorgebroken met zijn hit "The Impossible", in 2002, is hij één van de meest standvastige van allemaal gebleken.

Joe Nichols was born and raised in Rogers, Arkansas. Second son of Michael Curtis Nichols and Robin Larson Nichols. Joe has an older brother Michael C. Jr and a younger sister Kelli. His father, who worked as a trucker, also played bass guitar in local country bands; eventually, Nichols himself found work in a local rock band, before taking a job as a country disc jockey.[1] Nichols is part Cherokee.

One Step Away first began in 2006 when friends Terence Healy (guitar) and Mike Nuzzolo (bass) began jamming together. It wasn't long before Adam Carrington brought his classically trained voice into the mix, helping to define the sound that would become associated with One Step Away.

An EP later and drummer Ben Trudeau joined the fray. The path since then has been an upward one, with larger and larger gigs covering a bigger geographic area. One Step Away has now played coast to coast and won several regional and national competitions for songwriting and performance.

In early 2010 One Step Away dove into the studio with producers Dan Malsch and Alec Henninger of Soundmine Recording Studio (Four Year Strong, Framing Hanley, Forever the Sickest Kids). The resulting album, For the Broken, has One Step Away poised on the brink of the big time.

One Step Away has appeared on several TV and radio stations including: WBZ, Fox TV38, WCTX, WNAC, WSBK, WPXT, My R.I. TV, WWLP, WBRU, WZLX,WPXC,WMLN, WSNC, FM102x, WCAP and performed with big name bands on stages like Universal Studios Hollywood, Fox Theater, MGM Grand and more. In December 2010, One Step away was featured in Alternative Press Issue #269 and Skope Magazine.

Hoe ga ik dit uitleggen. Het is in ieder geval wel leuk volgens mij. Een mix van pater Moeskroen, Rammstein, Nena, Bap, Van Morrison en misschien ook wel de Chieftains.


Schandmaul werd in de zomer van 1998 opgericht door zes muzikanten uit de omgeving van München. De naam van de band is gebaseerd op de joker uit het kaartspel, omdat deze geen blad voor de mond neemt en af en toe 'vuilspreekt'.



Omdat ze geen coverband wilden zijn, begonnen ze met het schrijven van eigen nummers. Hun stijl is door de jaren heen slechts weinig veranderd.

Pete Droge is an American alternative/folk rock musician from Bainbridge Island in Washington State's Puget Sound. Pete Droge's debut album, "Necktie Second", finds the singer/songwriter following the footsteps of Tom Petty and Neil Young.

At this stage, Droge might not be as melodically sturdy as either of his influences, yet he can turn out a charming piece of roots rock like "If You Don't Love Me (I'll Kill Myself)" without much effort. "If You Don't Love Me" isn't indicative of the rest of the record — throughout Necktie Second, he's hunched over an acoustic guitar, singing sensitive, confessional songs.

He's got a more distinct backbeat and a bit more grit than most singer/songwriters, but many ofmore… the songs fail to be really compelling, making "Necktie Second" a promising debut, but not a particularly remarkable one.

On her second album for the Sugar Hill label, singer-songwriter Allison Moorer offers up another strong set of (largely) self-penned tunes. Like her genre-defying older sister, Shelby Lynne, Moorer is intent on straying from her country roots while still keeping them in the fold. This subtle stylistic tweaking is best heard on "Fairweather," co-written with GETTING SOMEWHERE's producer, Steve Earle, who expertly brings out the pop/rock elements in these 10 song Op het door Earle geproduceerde 'Getting Somewhere' zijn de donderwolken en logge countryrock van weleer grotendeels verdwenen.

In plaats daarvan horen we melodieuze popliedjes: Allison heeft duidelijk weer zin in het leven, en het is haar gegund. Negen van de tien nummers heeft ze helemaal zelf geschreven, en helaas wringt daar het schoentje. De songs missen de spanning van haar vroegere werk met Primm, en haar gevoel voor drama komt veel beter uit de verf als ze country, folk of soul zingt - wat ze hier maar sporadisch doet. Steve Earle had als producer ook wel wat strenger mogen zijn.

Allisons rijke, diepe en doorleefde stem door een vocoder sleuren ('Work To Do') is géén goed idee, en het goedbedoelde maar sentimentele eerbetoon aan zusje Shelby Lynne ('Where You Are') had best zonder de stroperige violen gekund. Nog erger zijn 'Fairweather' en 'If It's Just For Today' die ons - aargh! - aan Jewel deden denken: zulke slappe kost hoort niet thuis in het repertoire van een klassezangeres. s.

Ranging from the sonically dense, voodoo-tinged rock of “Sanctuary” to the modern day murder ballad “Moonlight Mission,” the 11-track collection is shaped by the dynamics that distinguish the band’s two principle songwriters Cris Jacobs and Kenny Liner.

Jacobs delivers Dixie-drenched southern soul, while Liner’s approach is steeped in swaggering American roots music.

Wir sind Helden (vaak afgekort tot WsH) is een Duitstalige popband uit Hamburg, tegenwoordig woonachtig in Berlijn. In 2002 werd de band nationaal bekend in Duitsland. Ook in de Benelux heeft de band enige bekendheid, onder meer door het optreden op Pinkpop in 2005, en concerten in verschillende Nederlandse steden.

De band werd in 2001 opgericht. In 2002 bereikte het lied Guten Tag (Reklamation) de Duitse hitparades, een jaar later gevolgd door het album Die Reklamation. Dit album werd een van de best verkopende platen in Duitsland in 2003 en 2004. De opvolger, Von hier an blind, bereikt in 2005 bij binnenkomst al de nummer-1-positie. De derde single van dat album, met dezelfde titel Von hier an blind, is niet alleen in het Duits maar ook in het Engels, Frans en Japans verschenen.

Eind maart 2007 is de derde album "Soundso" op de Duitse markt gebracht. Op 27 april verscheen de eerste single "Endlich Ein Grund Zur Panik". Opvolger is de single "Soundso" van het gelijknamige album uitgebracht in juni 2007. Wir sind Helden wordt een grote invloed toegekend. Ze worden gezien als voorloper van een beweging van Duitse popmuziek, de Neue Deutsche Welle, met onder meer Silbermond en Juli.

Amos Lee is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His musical style encompasses folk, soul, and jazz.

He has released three albums on Blue Note Records, "Amos Lee", "Supply and Demand" and "Last Days at the Lodge". He has been on tour with musicians such as Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello, Norah Jones, Paul Simon, Merle Haggard, John Prine, and Dave Matthews Band. Lee performs with drummer Fred Berman and bassist Jaron Olevsky.

Some of his musical influences include Stevie Wonder, John Prine, Bill Withers, and James Taylor. "Mission Bell" is an album by musician Amos Lee. It was released on January 25, 2011.

The album features Willie Nelson, Lucinda Williams, Priscila Ahn, Pieta Brown, James Gadson, and Calexico as guests on the album.
