Suburban malls require enormous amounts of space. This is an important element of the series. I want to create a sense of lonely, wasted space. The American ideal of Manifest Destiny and the settlement of wide open vistas have given way to suburban sprawl. Why is it that you can be anywhere in America, but suburban malls all look the same? I find this sameness and wasted space a sad, yet intractable part of American life, which is mainly due to our dependence on automobiles and economies of scale. Convenient shopping requires low prices and enormous amounts of parking. Consumption dictates aesthetics, to a large degree.
