In a culture in which people are easily lured by the appeal of status-enhancing symbols, I find beauty in derelict cars and unkempt landscapes. I have always been interested in painting vehicles and scenes that have defined the evolution of the American landscape.

In this particular series, I commemorate commercial vehicles inundated with graffiti and rust, working vehicles, and well-traveled recreational vehicles. I find that there is so much character in old delivery trucks and vans—especially when covered with graffiti—and in the old RVs parked in someone’s yard off a main road. Removing them from their everyday context gives them portrait-like importance. I paint with devoted attention to every imperfection and sign of age.

Painting and drawing these objects gives me a chance to document a time and place, and to make still a part of the ever-changing environment.

2008 has been an eventful year to say the least - it is difficult to sum up the thousands of stories in just a handful of photographs. That said, I will try to do what I've done with other photo narratives here, and tell a story of 2008 in photographs. It's not the story of 2008, it's certainly not all stories, but as a collection it does show a good portion of what life has been like over the past 12 months. Van Morrison is geboren in Belfast in 1945, als de zoon van een dokwerker die Amerikaanse blues en jazz verzamelde. In zijn jeugd luistert Van Morrison naar muziek van Muddy Waters, Mahalia Jackson, Lightnin' Hopkins en John Lee Hooker. Als tiener speelt hij gitaar, saxofoon en harmonica in verschillende Ierse bands tot hij in 1964 de R&B-band Them vormt.

In 1967 start Morrison zijn solocarrière in New York waar hij het album 'Blowin Your Mind' opneemt. Vervolgens produceert Morrison verschillende albums en treedt hij intensief op met zijn band. In 1974 keert hij terug naar zijn geboorteland en zijn roots, maar drie jaar later komt Morrison terug met 'A Period Of Transition'. Hij verhuist naar London en vooral op zijn albums uit de jaren tachtig is zijn spirituele zoektocht een belangrijk thema.

Eind jaren tachtig keert hij weer even terug naar zijn roots waarna hij een opmerkelijk productief decennium afsluit met zijn commercieel meest succesvolle album 'Avalon Sunset'. In de jaren negentig brengt hij vervolgens verschillende albums uit, van spirituele zelfontdekking tot meer blues georiënteerd, nooit eerder uitgebrachte tracks uit zijn eerdere periode en diverse eigen interpretaties van klassieke songs. Eind vorige eeuw boekt Morrison opnieuw groot succes met het album 'Back On Top', waar hij zich ook nu nog na ruim veertig jaar muziek bevindt.
