According to photographer the wounded woman was later helped by her neighbors and evacuated her to a safe area. Russia sent hundreds of tanks and troops into the separatist province of South Ossetia and bombed Georgian towns Saturday in a major escalation of the conflict that has left scores of civilians dead and wounded.

Op 8 augustus 2008 startte Georgië een aanval tegen de afvallige regio Zuid-Ossetië nadat het eerder overeengekomen staakt-het-vuren was geschonden. Georgische troepen trokken de hoofdstad Tsinvali binnen. Rusland reageerde echter met het sturen van meer dan 100 tanks en vliegtuigen, die het gebied reeds op 8 augustus weer in handen hadden. Ook werden verschillende Georgische steden en militaire en civiele infrastructuur in het land bestookt door Russische gevechtsvliegtuigen.
